Sarah Trethowan

Sarah in her Studio

Sarah Trethowan is a painter and printmaker who studied art in London and came to live in Australia –“quite a while ago.”
She’s been a working artist since the early 1990’s and has exhibited her paintings and prints in North East Victoria as well as in Melbourne and Sydney.

She lives on a farm near Violet Town, overlooking an olive grove “Every new day that I set out to make a painting I’m on a journey, corny as though this may sound. I need to turn at the right signposts in order not go down an over beaten track and alternatively not to get lost in the wilderness. I’m interested in exploring the basic elements of line and colour in an abstract way. I’m seeking a pared down, a minimalist way of making art. It’s an exciting process.”

As well as art Sarah is interested in growing vegetables and keeping free range hens. “My hens often come into my studio and make influential comments about my work,” she says, “and peck at my shoelaces.”

The landscape that surrounds me the lines of trees and branches, shafts of light, straight roads and momentary flashes one sees out of the corner of my eye are all subjects for her most recent work though not in a representational way.
